About the Self Defense Mission

What is the Self Defense Mission?

We are a foundation that raises funds to help everyday Americans who acted in legitimate self-defense get a real legal defense. We also plan to support proactive self-defense through safety tools, training, and grants.

Why was it started?

Our founder's family went through the court system after their son defended himself. They found that wealthy defendants are defended while working families are merely represented, and they had no one to call for help. The Self Defense Mission is the resource they wish they'd had.

What is the difference between being "represented" and being "defended"?

A public defender may carry 30 to 50 cases at once and meet with you once every few weeks. A dedicated defense team understands self-defense law and the weapons involved, and works on your case continuously. That level of defense typically costs $300,000 to $500,000.

Do you only help in cases involving guns?

No. Self-defense isn't just about firearms, and it doesn't always involve loss of life. We care about anyone who lawfully defends themselves, whatever the circumstances.

Is this a political organization?

No. We aim to stay apolitical. We welcome supporters regardless of their views on firearms, including people who choose not to keep guns in their homes. Our focus is fairness in the justice system.

Do you operate outside the United States?

Not at this time. We serve people in the United States only.

Getting Help

Who can receive help?

People facing charges after a legitimate act of self-defense, whose case passes our vetting process.

How do you decide whether a case is legitimate?

Every case is reviewed by our board, supported by advisors with relevant expertise, including law enforcement and prosecutorial experience. The process typically includes:

  • Reviewing the charging documents
  • An interview with the person charged, by our team or someone we send on our behalf
  • A background check
  • A review of the facts of the case
  • Board review, including input from the attorney who meets with the person

We expect to decline more cases than we accept.

How much funding will I receive?

There is no set amount. Each case is different, and support is determined case by case.

How do you find the right attorney?

Through a growing network of attorneys who specialize in self-defense law in different states and counties. We help match you with someone local who understands your state's self-defense laws.

I can't afford $500,000 up front. Is there any point in calling a specialist?

Yes. Many people don't realize that specialized self-defense attorneys will often review a case first, and that it's possible to retain an attorney and fundraise afterward. We can help with both.

Do you help with media coverage?

Yes. Early coverage can shape public perception of a case, sometimes inaccurately. We aim to help families respond to the media and make sure the facts are heard.

Giving and Transparency

Where does my donation go?

Toward legal defense for vetted self-defense cases, media response, and, as we grow, proactive self-defense tools, classes, and grants.

Is your board paid?

No. Our board members are unpaid volunteers.

Can I see how the money is spent?

Yes. Transparency is central to who we are, and supporters will be able to see where funds are allocated.

I believe in this cause but can't publicly support a specific case. Can I still help?

Absolutely. Many people support the right to self-defense but can't attach their name or business to an individual case. When you give to the Self Defense Mission, we act on your behalf.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Proactive Self-Defense

Yes, or we will, as funding grows. Plans include:

  • Fundraising events to provide personal safety alarms to young women
  • Grants for self-defense classes (such as jiu-jitsu or karate) for people who can't afford them, including single mothers and children who have lost a parent
  • Community resources to help people protect themselves

Do you partner with other self-defense organizations?

Yes, where there's no conflict of interest. Other organizations mostly focus on teaching self-defense, and we'd welcome partnering with them on proactive training.

How can I nominate someone for a self-defense class grant?

Getting Involved

What's next for the Self Defense Mission?

2027 will be a big year. We'll be networking on the ground, building grassroots support in California, and traveling to other states where we've been invited to speak and attend events.

How can I help beyond donating?
